Palmerston railway photographs, research notes, and publications, ca. 1915-2002. File 1: Railway photographs, ca. 1947-2002. [ STACKS ] Most of the photographs listed below had been stored in sticky "magnetic" photograph album pages [removed for conservation purposes]. These early images may have been taken by William Alfred Morley (1886-1965) of Palmerston, who worked on the railway, or by his son, Mervyn Alfred Morley (1927-2011) who may have also worked on the railway. Photographs are black and white unless otherwise noted. - ph 49134: Ten men posed in the snow by a railway snow plough, March 1947. From page identified as "Dobbinton / Derailment / Left Side". An accompanying piece of paper gives further description. It identifies it as "Derailment / 1947 Snowstorm / Location Owen Sound Sub. Between mileage 43.94 Dobbinton and / mileage 49.6 Tara" in Bruce County. According to the notes, this image depicts a, "snow plow sitting on the edge of a farmer's field. Sitting on the boiler of the locomotive Bun Morley, standing by the smoke stack, Geo. Lovell, [Elroy Stephenson], Matty Matthews, Gordon McCallum, engineer. Labeled in album, "Engine 5250 / model of a passenger engine / used on 172-175 Palmerston / to Toronto". - ph 49133: Colour photograph of Canadian National Railway locomotive 5588 on display at Dieppe Park in Windsor, Ontario, ca. 2005. It is located on a grassy area and is enclosed by a short cast-iron fence. High rise buildings of Detroit, Michigan, visible in background. Label in the album describes it as, "Engine 5588 / CN Lomomitive sitting in / a park on Windsor's Water / Front. (run through Palmerston)". According to a 2012 post on the website of the Canadian Transportation Museum, this locomotive "was found at the CN Railyards in London Ontario by members of the Canadian Transportation Museum in 1961. The museum members remember that about 75 steam locomotives were there ready to be busted up and turned into scrap. Three engines were available for sale (engine 5588, its twin and one more larger engine). The group negotiated a price of approxmiately $3500. The members…arranged to transport the steam engine to Windsor, have it restored, created a campaign to raise funds to pay for its permanent mounting on display in Dieppe Park…". The locomotive is known locally as "The Spirit of Windsor". File 2: Maps by Mervyn Alfred "Bun" Morley (1927-2011), 1997-1998. It depicts several lines of railway tracks, railway buildings, and nearby streets in Palmerston, Ontario. Identified buildings include a club house, sheds, offices, round house, coal chute, weigh scale, stock pens, railway sattion, bunk house, Queen's Hotel, water tower, and mill. Inset map at lower right identifies the planing mill, stock pens, creamery, Wald's Produce and neighbouring buildings. Signed and dated lower right, "M Morley / 1998". 30.4 x 35.6 cm. - MAP 3025: Hand-drawn black ink on onionskin paper map titled "Palmerston Early 1900's" drawn by Mervyn Alfred "Bun" Morley, 1998. It depicts downtown Palmerston, Ontario, focussing on the area between Norman Street and William Street. Main Street depicted vertically at right. Areas of bush, swamp, fields, and sand pits are indicated, as well as railway tracks and roads. Locations of buildings are shown and most have been identified. They include the pork processing plant, slaughter house, pens, trunk factory, malt factory, coal shed, Watt's Mill, the Creamery, Nurse's Auto Show Room, the planing mill, Saw mill, and section shanties. Signed and dated lower right, "M. Morley / 1998". 30.4 x 35.4 cm. - MAP 3026: Hand-drawn black ink on paper map, tinted with pencil crayon, drawn by Mervyn Alfred "Bun" Morley, 1997. It is untitled, but depicts past and present railway lines through an area of southwestern Ontario from London north to Colpoys Bay, and from Lake Huron east to Fergus. Palmerston is at the approximate centre of the map. Each railway stop is labeled, and stations depicted, mostly as nondescript single-storey buildings, but more elaborate buildings are shown at Palmerston, London, Hanover, and Owen Sound. Land has been coloured green, major towns highlighted in yellow, and county names highlighted in blue. Southampton light house, sailboats, and a ship are depicted in Lake Huron. A ship appears docked at Owen Sound. Signed and dated lower right, "Bun Morley / 1997". 42.4 x 35.5 cm. - MAP 3027: Hand-drawn black ink on paper map, tinted with pencil crayon, drawn by Mervyn Alfred "Bun" Morley, ca. 1997. It includes two maps, one titled "Hanover 1940-1950" at the top of the page, and one titled "Fergus 1940-1950" on the lower half of the page. The top map of Hanover, Ontario, shows the Saugeen River running through town, railway tracks, streets, and the shape and location of several buildings. These include the Canadian National Railway station, Knechtel Lumber Mill, Knechtel Furniture manufacturing, William Knechtel and Sons Flour, Spietz Furniture, and Teppler Furntiure. Ink drawing at upper right of a building, coloured with brown pencil crayon, is identified as "Grand Trunk Station Replaced 1907," presumably in Hanover. The Lower map of Fergus, Ontario focussing on the Beatty Brothers factory on Hill Street [mislabeled as "Mill St" on the map] and the railway lines that ran near to it. Other identified streets include [St.] George Street and Breadalbane Street. Identified buildings include the Beatty Brothers factory, freight sheds, Canadian Pacific Railway Station, Tweddle Chick Hatchery, stock yards, water tower, and the Canadian National Railway Station. Below this map is a pen and ink drawing of a railway station, coloured in with brown pencil crayon. Beneath it is inscribed in captital letters in ink, "Wellington, Grey and Bruce Railway First Train / into Fergus. Sept. 13, 1870. The station was / destroyed by fire. New station built 1902. / The old station was removed in 1982 / Served the town for 80 years." Not signed or dated. 42.4 x 35.5 cm. File 3: Morley family documents, 1915-1957. [ MU 1351 ] - item 1: Photocopy of the World War I attestation paper of William Alfred Morley (1886-1965) of Palmerston, October 1915. He lists his next of kin as his mother, "Mrs. William Morley" of Palmerston. 2 pages. - item 2: Canadian National Railway pass issued to freight shed foreman, "W. A. Morley & wife" to allow passage "over entire system" for the years 1946-1947. It is a yellow card, 6.3 x 10.2 cm, laminated on the front side, and includes identity photographs of both William Alfred Morley and his wife. Parital embossed seal over both photographs. On reverse are the conditions of use. Signature area left blank. - item 3: Canadian National Railway pass issued to freight foreman, "W. A. Morley and Wife" for passage over the "entire system" for the years 1956-1957. Lines include the Canadian National Railway, Grand Trunk Western Railroad, Central Vermont Railway, and the Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway. It is an orange card, 6.4 x 10.2 cm, laminated on both sides. Signatures of D. Gordon and J. Donoghue[?]. [ MU 1351 ] - item 1: Photocopy of four typed pages, anonymous but possibly written by Mervyn Alfred Morley (1927-2011), relating to railway employees and locomotives from Palmerston, Ontario, ca. 1990. Page titled "Locomotives / Palmerston Roundhouse" lists the four-digit locomotive numbers under their type, e.g. "10 wheelers", with a blurb about locomotives. The other three pages list railway employees in Palmerston under headings such as "Conductors & Brakemen", and notes where employees died on the job. - item 2: Unidentified newspaper clipping titled "Highway 6: Hamilton to Owen Sound via Fergus, Mount Forest, and Durham", ca. 1920. It describes the state of the road from those locations. Pasted to a sticky "magnetic" photo album page with a typed transcription of the article; photocopy only retained. - item 3: Photocopy of a typed poem titled at top of first page, "The Old Iron Bridge / By the late Cecil Peavoy" ca. 1990. The rhyming poem recounts the author's memories of childhood growing up in Palmerston, Ontario. It touches on the railway pedestrian bridge, the reckless fun of boys, chewing tar in lieu of bubble gum, trains and railwaymen, games of hide and seek, jumping over hornets' nests, pulling pranks at Hallowe'en, playing shinny on the frozen pond using frozen horse manure as a hockey puck, and having hot cocoa by the fire with friends. 6 pages. File 5: Publications, 1945-1997. - item 1: Palmerston Observer, Volume XII, Issue 45, 10 May 1945. 6 pages. Includes obituaries of Barbara Close, James Wait, Mary Helen Carr, and Corrine MacArthur. [STACKS] - item 2: Membership directory, 1986, titled "Palmerston United Church / 251 James Street / Palmerston, Ontario / Centennial / of / Church Ediface / 1886-1986." Unpaginated. Includes minister's message by Rev. Kennth S. Tanner, and listing of members of the congregation, choirs, boards of elders, stewards, and trustees, and Sunday School students. Illustrated with photographs throughout. Members names, addresses and telephone numbers listed in last pages. Paper cover, coil bound. Cover includes colour illustration of the church by local artist, Brian Dalton. Sticker at top right of cover reads, "Maurice & Betty / Audet". Single page tucked inside directory has crest and message from the United Church of Canada. [ MU 1351 ] - item 3: Town of Palmerston Community Service Guide, ca. 1997. Softcover, 34 pages, illustrated; includes maps. It provides contact information for local organizations, such as government, medical, religious, educational, sports, and service groups, often with a description of their scope and services. The booklet begins with a history of Palmerston.
