The Life of James J. Hill [1837-1916], Volume I, by Joseph Gilpin Pyle, published by McClelland, Goodchild & Stewart, Toronto, ca.1917. "Authorized" biography, with instructions from the subject to the author, and access by the author to the papers and letters of James Jerome Hill, after his death. Volume I concludes about 1900. Includes portraits. The Hills came to the area in 1829, and J.J. Hill's parents lived in Rockwood from 1848 - 1852, where James attended Rockwood Academy. It was after the death of James Hill [Sr], the family moved to Guelph. James Hill left for St. Paul, Minnesota 1856. The first Chapter (pages 1-25) deals with the early years of the family. |
