Robert Boyd was born in 1797 in Ayrshire, Scotland, to John Boyd and Margaret Howat. He emigrated to Canada in 1830, where he married fellow Scot, Elisabeth 'Betsy' Inglis (1811-1870) on 08 August 1840. They farmed in the Paisley Block, Guelph Township, and raised a family. His wife passed away in 1870, and he retired from the farm into the Town of Guelph around 1876. Robert Boyd passed away on 31 January 1880. During his life in Wellington County, he became a poet of some renown, his most famous work being "The Shanty". His poems were published in local newspapers, including the Guelph Mercury. In 1995 his poems were compiled and published as "The Poems of Robert Boyd 1797-1880", edited with an introduction by Robert W. White, 1995 [See WCMA A1995.58]. See ART 888 for accompanying portrait.
