Provenance |
The kilt was worn by "Buff" MacQuarrie, a Scout master of the 1st Fergus troop from the 1950's to the 1970's. The kilt was made in the 1960's by an Elora seamstress. The Scout troop raised the money to buy the Hunter-MacIntyre bolt of tartan cloth from Scotland. They raised the money by doing such events as mocassin dances. When the bolt arrived at Customs, they didn't have enough money to pay the duty tax. The troop raised more money and then took the bolt to a seamstress who made the kilts for the whole troop. The donor's grandfather, Simeon Holman (d. 2001) was involved in Scouting in Fergus since its beginnings in 1928 when the 1st Fergus Troop was established. He was born and raised in Fergus. Simeon's son, Fred Holman (1928-2003) (and the donor's father) was born and raised in Fergus. Fred was involved in Scouting since the 1940s. He was a leader of the 1st Fergus Cubs, Scouts and Rovers. |
