Description |
Four fine silk Chinese embroidered panels for a screen. Each panel is tall and rectangular in shape. They consist of a heavy embossed paper covered with brown silk on the front and (yellowed) cotton on the rear. Each panel is embroidered silk on silk depicting birds and foliage. Each is trimmed, around the outer edge, with paper covered with brown silk. (.01) Depicts two hawk-like birds in flight; white foliage and green leaves. Embroidery is in various shades of brown, green, white, gray. (.02) Depicts red and white blossoms; two wading birds; a small bird in flight. In shades of brown, red, white, gray and green. (.03) Depicts red and white blossoms and two birds in flight; white, red, green and black. (.04) Depicts two birds wading in water; a branch of pink blossoms; a small perched bird. Embroidery is in colours, brown, white, green pink. |

These panels were originally in a screen. They were a wedding present to the donor's parents, said to have been from Sir Richard and Lady Cartwright. |
