Provenance |
Nicholaus Hornyansky (11 April 1896-25 May 1965) was educated in fine art in his native Budapest, Hungary, but also studied in Austria and other parts of Europe, including a period in Belgium in 1919 where he studied landscape painting with followers of Franz Hens. He emigrated to Canada in 1929 and lived in Toronto, where he taught printmaking at the Ontario College of Art from 1945-1965. He continued his work as an artist, exhibiting across Canada, the United States, and in South Africa. He was a member of the Canadian Society of Painters, Etchers and Engravers, the Canadian Society of Graphic Art, and the American Colour Print Society. He was also elected an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (1943), and won several awards for his work. The donor's grandmother was Euphemia Boyd Clark. These prints were in the collection of Euphemia's two spinster sisters, Muriel and Georgina "Jean" Clark of Elora. The donor remembers visiting them as a child, and seeing these prints on display in his great aunts' apartment. |
