Provenance |
Agnes 'Nancy' Torrance (1837-1898) married James Rea (1837-1901) and they lived at Lots 29-30, Concession 7, Eramosa Township. Their daughter, Euphemia Rea (1858-1945), married James Grant (1848-1927) and raised a family. Euphemia and James' son Melvin Grant (1892-1957) is the donor's father. For more information see A1994.584, "Rea (Eramosa Twp.)" family file in Archives Reading Room. The artist's signature on Art 815 appears similar to those on ART 347 and on ART 315. The artist is likely Jane Tolton (1871- ), originally of Eramosa Township. The 1906 Historical Atlas of Wellington County notes that "Miss Jane Tolton, artist, studio Guelph City, is a pupil of Prof. Shaw, of Guelph, and H. Hatch of Woodstock, who studied twelve years in Europe, and became famous as an artist. His pupil, Miss Tolton, exhibits at the various exhibitions, and obtains good prices for her paintings. " |
