Description |
Oil on canvas painting (.01), a portrait of George Beatty (1845-1921) of Fergus, by Canadian artist Wyly Grier (1862-1957), painted ca. 1920. He is depicted seated on a wooden chair, facing left, with his head turned towards the viewer, and is wearing a black suit and tie with a white shirt. He is bald save for wisps of hair at the sides of his head, and sports a white goatee moustache and beard. Neutral dark green background. Signed lower right, "E. WYLY GRIER". The painting is mounted in a heavy, ornate wooden frame (.02), painted gold. Frame by MacKenzie and Company, and framed by Matthews Art Gallery. ART N |

George Beatty Jr. was born in Albion, Ontario on 23 November 1845 to George and Ann [or Ellen] Beatty. George Jr., along with his brother Matthew, founded Beatty Brothers Limited in Fergus, Ontario, in 1874. Two years later, George married Martha Rutherford of Albion. Their sons, William G. and Milton J. Beatty, joined the company in 1901, following completion of their college courses. George Beatty Jr. passed away on 16 June 1921. Milton Beatty is the grandfather of the donor. Canadian artist, Sir Edmund Wyly Grier, was born in Australia on 26 November 1862. As a young adult, he studied art in London, Rome, and Paris, and exhibited his work in England between 1886-1895. After returning to Canada in 1891, he worked as a Toronto-based portraitist until 1947. He became president of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1929, and was knighted in 1935. Sir E.
