The snuffbox belonged to a member of the Abel family of Nichol Township. Helen Grieve was married to John Abel on January 1, 1874. A teamster and farmer in Nichol Township. Helen and John had nine children together: Mary Ann, John, Robert, Elizabeth, Helen, James, Sarah, Margaret Harrison "Maggie", and Irene H. Helen (nee Grieve) Abel's parents were Robert Grieve and Helen Irving. Helen Irving was born in Scotland in 1818 and died in Stratford, Ont. in 1913. Nearly all "black" horn boxes are made from buffalo. From 1800 - 1825 three dimensional mouldings were produced from buffalo horn which were imported to Europe from Africa and Asia. The boxes may show coloured hightlights under the surface brought on by the stress of moulding. |
