Provenance |
Inez Evelyn Thompson (b.1913, Toronto) studied art as a child in Port Hope. She held jobs as a bank clerk, store clerk and dental receptionist until 1945 when she was employed the the Upper Canada Bird Craft Studio in Toronto. She painted the birds carved by the owner 1945-1958. In 1958, Inez branched out on her own with her business partner, Marion Morton. Inez designed, painted and carved bird brooches and earrings. In 1967, she was accepted as an exhibitor at the Canadian Design Centre, Toronto. Her work was also on display at Ontario House, London, UK. In 1970, Inez and Marion moved to Hillsburgh where Inez opened her Bird Craft Studio. Inez retired to Erin in the mid-1980s. "The legacy of Inez Thompson lies chiefly in her bird carvings for which she was duly famous. Using bird "skins" obtained from the Royal Ontario Museum, photographs, reference books and her own observations of birds in the wild, she attained an outstanding degree of accuracy both in shape and colour, as attested by numerous newspaper articles and letters. Her paintings and sketches, while perhaps not so widely known, show a marked influence of the Group of Seven and reveal a gentle artist closely attuned to nature."
