Description |
A two piece black cotton dress consisting of a skirt (.01) and a bodice (.02) dated circa 1875-1885. The skirt is made up of six pieces with a cartridge pleat at the center back. Lined with grey cotton. Slit down the back. Bodice (.02) has a blouse front with lapels on either side and rows of ruching. Attaches to the skirt with hooks and eyes. Bodice has ruching around the collar, the bottom edge, on the epaulettes, down the front and on the lapels. High necked collar joined with two hooks and eyes. Lined with black silk. Eighteen sets of buttons down the front. |

Property of the donor's mother, Mrs. Edith Jane Wallace (McDermaid) who lived in Teviotdale and married in 1924. Edith moved to Fergus in 1944 and lived there until her death in 1976. This cape is believed to have been preserved by Edith but belonged originally to either her mother, Isabella McDermaid (Blair, d. 1944) or her grandmother Mrs. Blair (Hood d. 1895). |
