Description |
Charcoal enhanced photograph on paper (.01), untitled, by an unidentified artist, ca. 1900. It is a bust-length portrait of Lydia Moldenhauer (nee Michalis, 1878-195_) and her husband Julius Moldenhauer (1872-1939) of Renfrew Township, ca. 1900. She has long curly hair, parted at the centre and pulled back, and is wearing a tall-necked dress with crescent-shaped brooch at neck, and a corsage. Her husband has short dark hair and a full moustache, waxed at the ends to a point, and suit and bow tie. Bow regard the viewer. It is mounted in a wooden frame (.02) constructed of four mouldings for a total width of 13.2 cm: the outer moulding is oak, stained variegated brown and varnished. Next, compo decoration in a scrolled foliage pattern, painted gold. The third, oak, stained variegated brown and varnished. The inner moulding is compo decorated in a diamond and floral pattern, painted gold. E673 |

Julius Moldenhauer was born 07 October 1872 to William Moldenhauer and Albertine (nee Kurth[?]). He emigrated to Canada from Germany with his family in 1884, settling in Renfrew County, Eastern Ontario. Lydia Michalis was born 28 May 1878 to Ernest Michalis and Wilheminne Wigrud[?] in South Algona Township, Ontario. Julius and Lydia were married in Renfrew County on 05 October 1899, and had children Esmerelda Lila Ruth, known as "Essie", on 27 September 1900. She was followed by siblings Arthur "Art" (born 27 July 1902), Irene Ruby Vera "Ruby" (born 05 Aug. 1905), and Edna. The family moved to the farm at Lot 10, Concession 5, West of the Grand River, in Pilkington Township, Wellington County, in 1916. On 18 January 1939, Julius passed away, and his widow sold the farm in January 1942. Lydia was still living in 1950. The donors are descendants of Julius and Lydia Moldenhauer. |
