Description |
Cream-coloured wedding dress in Empire style has a high-waisted bodice with softly draped overlay of voile edged with cream silk fringe. High neckline has V-shaped insert of Irish lace, fastened at the back with hooks and embroidered eyes. The raglan sleeves are covered with voile and edged with fringe. Satin A-line skirt with back and front panels of voile edged with fringe at the bottom. Seed pearl trim on the sides, 12 on the right and 7 seed pearl trim on the left. |

The wedding dress belong to Ethel Barber (Mrs. J.J. Davis) born in Alton in 1882. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Barber. She was married to Jack J. Davis (Manager of the Drayton Branch of the Royal Bank of Canada) on January 3, 1912. They lived in the town of Leamington, Wroxeter, and later moved to Alma and Drayton. They had two children, Brock Davis and Marjorie. Ethel belonged to a number of groups. She was a member of the local school board (the first woman member). She attained high office in the order of the Eastern Star as a District Deputy Grand Matron in the Guelph District. She also held a Directorship in the local Fall Fair and was very active in this work. Ethel died in 1934. She was the aunt of the donor's husband. |
