Description |
Framed oil painting on commercially prepared canvas panel entitled "Sleeping Nude" by artist Corbett Gray, 1975; depicts a female figure, with blonde hair, lying on her side; her head rests on a blue, white and green striped pillow; blue, purple and pink bedding surrounds her. (.01). Framing consists of a narrow wooden moulding painted navy blue and a wide linen liner with a gilt inner edge (.02). E201 |

Corbett Gray (1913-1991) was born in Manitoba and studied at the Winnipeg School of Art under L. LeMoine FitzGerald. After serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War, Gray studied at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. From the 1950s-1970s, Gray worked out of Guelph as Art Supervisor to the Wellington County Board of Education. He then purchased a studio in Elora in 1974, and remained an Elora-based artist until his death in 1991. This piece was one of a dozen or so paintings donated by the artist to Guelph Creative Arts to be sold at Painting on the Green, ca.1977. |
