Provenance |
Douglas James Manley, known as "Jim", was born 06 March 1923 and grew up in Cobourg, Ontario. Having joined the Canadian military during the Second World War, Jim left to serve overseas in 1941. He notes that, "I've always been an artist. As a child, I would always be sketching and drawing cartoons. Even while serving overseas during World War II, I would spend my spare time creating cartoons for the mess hall. I produced a weekly comic strip focusing on the lighter side of war that was later published into a book" [from www.jamesmanleyart.com]. He also passed his time in France by writing letters home to his girlfriend, Eileen White. The envelopes for these letters he adorned with humourous cartoons to make her smile. At the time, White was living in Hamilton, where she was training to become a nurse. She later moved to the nurses' residence at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Dunn Avenue, Toronto. After the War, Manley returned to Cobourg, and continued to write to White until at least 1946 (Manley and White didn't remain a couple; each later met and married another). According to Manley's website www.jamesmanleyart.com [accessed 23 Nov. 2010], upon returning to Ontario after serving overseas, he "trained as a commercial artist and worked in the art department of advertising and sales companies in Hamilton and Kitchener, Ontario. He worked for 25 years as the Art Director of Davis and Henderson in Waterloo, Ontario. In 1989 he relocated to British Columbia and moved to Gibsons [BC] in 1991." His obituary notes that he passed away on 27 November 2010. Information about Jim Manley filed with artwork. |
