Handknit by Margaret Alexander's maternal grandmother, Flora (Peden) Chalmers (1865-1895) who was born and raised near Belwood, lot 9 concession 10, East Garafraxa Township. Her parents were Hugh and Janet Peden. In 1889 Flora married John Chalmers in St. Stephens Church, Belwood and they moved to his farm in Waterloo County. They had four daughters. When the youngest, Florence (donor's mother), was one month old, Flora died of infection (family says infection was brought by the doctor), March 1895. Florence lived from that time with John's mother, Margaret (Fleming) Chalmers and father on a farm near Milverton, Perth County. In 1900 John moved back to Fergus with the three older girls. Florence returned to live with her father and sisters when she was a teenager, about 1910. |
