Description |
Two clear glass medical thermometers (.01 & .02), dated circa 1897. The temperature scale, ranging from 95 to 112 degrees, is marked in black, against a white background. Both thermometers are broken at the tip; no mercury. The thermometers are stored in a red medical thermometer case (2013.10.3.03) dated circa 1897. |

The thermometers belonged to Lydia Fahrner (1870-1952). She graduated from the Nicholls Hospital Training School in Peterborough in 1897, at the age of 27. Lydia did nursing both in Michigan and Manitoba, where her two brothers were living. She became Matron of Nursing in Portage La Prairie. In 1914, after seven years, she returned home to Morriston to care for her mother and sister, who were both incapacitated with a rheumatic condition. Lydia eventually developed the same condition. She died in 1952, at the age of 82. |
