Description |
Memorial Cross medal (.01) with replacement purple ribbon (.02), accompanied by original purple silk ribbon (.03), stored inside medal box (.05) under a removeable velvet insert (.04) and a documentary card (.06). The medal (.01) and replacement ribbon (.02) are mounted and framed with other items in this donation. The medal is sterling silver in the form of a cross pattee shape with a crown at the end of the upright arm, and a maple leaf at the end of the other three arms. The centre of the medal has a laurel wreath with the cypher GRI for King George the Fifth. The original ribbon (.03) is faded and worn. The medal box insert (.04) is covered with a cream-coloured velvet with a cream ribbon tab at the top. The medal box (.05) is rectangular, hinged, and covered with black leatherette with a gilt crown centered on the lid. The documentary card (.06) issued with the medal is stored in a separate location from the medal box. It is rectangular, off-white and printed with black text and Canada crest. |

The memorial cross was issued to Jennie Dickinson of Elora, in memory of her son, Cpl Albert Stanley Dickinson (1891-1918) who was killed in action during the First World War. Corporal Albert Stanley Dickinson, service number 928320, was born in Elora on 18 November 1892 to Daniel and Jennie Dickinson. He enlisted with the 153rd (Wellington) Battalion CEF on 1 January 1916. He was transferred to the 25th Reserve Battalion followed by the 18th Battalion in 1917, and then to the 8th Battalion. He was killed in action on 2 September 1918 in France. |
