Description |
A brass thermometer case (.01 and .02) and glass thermometer (.03) dated circa 1897. The case has a stamped decorative design overall with an inscribed "L. Fahrner" name plate at the middle. On one end is a loop with two link chains. On the other end is a screw top lid (.02). |

The thermometer and case belonged to Lydia Fahrner (1870-1952). She graduated from the Nicholls Hospital Training School in Peterborough in 1897, at the age of 27. Lydia did nursing both in Michigan and Manitoba, where her two brothers were living. She became Matron of Nursing in Portage La Prairie. In 1914, after seven years, she returned home to Morriston to care for her mother and sister, who were both incapacitated with a rheumatic condition. Lydia eventually developed the same condition. She died in 1952, at the age of 82. |
