Provenance |
John Wilson Bengough (1851-1923) was a Canadian cartoonist who began with the [Toronto] Globe newspaper before founding his own satirical weekly, Grip (1873-1894). See Canadian Encyclopaedia for further details. The Fergus News-Record of 22 January 1914 reported that the services of cartoonist J.W. Bengough had been secured for a day and a half. The first of these commissioned cartoons was published in the News Record on 12 February 1914, and depicted His Worship, the Mayor, T.N. Wansborough. Of the thirty-two cartoons that comprise AC2006.3, sixteen, accompanied by biographical information, appeared in the paper every second week or so, until the end of 1914. In this particular case, the subject of the caricature is unidentified, though he may be William A. Jackson, Andrew H. Foote, or John Graham, all of whom are listed in the 1910 Directory as bakers in Fergus. It could also be Charles Mills, Robert Dobbie, William Black, or Joseph Forster who, along with William A. Jackson, are listed as bakers in Fergus in the 1911 Census. Fergus butchers listed in the 1910 Directory include Michael Bergin and Fred Hartman. Those listed in the 1911 Census are Joseph Bergin, Michael Bergin, William Chapman, Richard Stait, John Kirvay [Kirvan?], and Thomas Burns. There are no instructions to the engraver on the reverse, so this image might not have been published. |
