Description |
Enhanced photograph (.01), untitled and by an unidentified artist, ca. 1885. It is a bust-length charcoal portrait of Elizabeth Jones (ca. 1818-1894) of Pilkington Township and Elora, as a middle-aged woman. She is facing the viewer, wearing a dark dress with three buttons down the front, and a white scalloped collar; dress has a button with bow at neck; she wears her hair loosely up under a feathered cap or her own hair, plaited and wound round the top of her head. Signed in ink at lower right, "Reid Bros. / 383 Queen W., / Toronto". Inscribed in pencil on rear of image: "44 Sept / Elora / G.P. July 3rd / K.H July 7 / 50 / John Jones / Levitt". Mounted in a mid-toned oak frame (.02) with raised, matte, gold-coloured band running around mid-section of frame. Hand-written in blue crayon on underside of wood backing, "Wm. Slimon / Glenallan.". Elizabeth Jones was born ca. 1818 in Denbighshire, Wales. She and husband David Jones (ca. 1818-1870), who was also Welsh, moved to Canada before 1851 and at Lot 17, Concession 3 west of the Grand River in Pilkington Township from at least 1861. After David's death in 1870, Elizabeth and their children continued to farm in Pilkington. By 1891, Elizabeth had moved to Elora where she died on 24 August 1894. |
