Description |
Pen and ink drawing with ink wash, in earth tones, by Mary Grant (1819-1856) of Pilkington Township, entitled "Village of Elora in 1849", and drawn 1849; it shows the view from the north bank of the Grand River, looking southeast past the Elora Mill and two buildings on Mill Street West, towards the south bank of the river; visible is the wooden Victoria Street bridge, the falls, partially obscured Islet Rock/Tooth of Time (in dark grey wash), and cliffs of the Elora Gorge; also visible are small log and frame houses along Victoria Street, High Street, Carlton Place, and Walnut Street; the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Pilkington Township (at intersection of County Road 7 at County Road 21) is visible at top of the hill at far right. Was in the possession of the family of Alex Watt of Upper Nichol Township until they left their farm in 1951. Mary Grant was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, but had emigrated to Nichol Township, Wellington County by 1845 when she married Hugh Roberts (1817-1897) of "Penny Pryn" farm, Lots 4-5, Concession A, Pilkington Township. Mary Grant served as the first female schoolteacher in Elora. She died in Pilkington Township on 01 June 1856. The Church of St. John the Evangelist, depicted in this drawing, was the church that she attended. |
