Description |
The Fergus News-Record Negative fonds, 1964-1969, consists of approximately 400 envelopes containing an estimated 5,000 black and white and colour negatives taken by William Templin. SEE DETAILED FINDING AID. Born 16 June 1926, William Templin followed his grandfather and father into the local newspaper, the Fergus News-Record. He was involved with writing, photographing and advertising 1947-1969. Between December 5, 1963 and December 20, 1967, the newspaper featured his striking full-front-page photographs. Photographer, William Templin's negatives are mostly 6 x 6 cm. (2 1/4" x 2 1/4") and were taken with a f3.5 Rolleiflex camera using Kodak Tri-X film. These were developed to normal speed in one-shot (used only once) Kodak D-76 developer. He took care that the fixing process was done in fresh solution and not too prolonged and the film was treated with hypo clearing agent and given extra washing. Most negatives are black and white; some are colour negatives; some are 35mm. On average each envelope contains 12 exposures, some contain 18, 28, 36 or 40 exposures. 40 envelopes (Nos. 1-40) contain colour negatives dated Jan. 29, 1965 - Oct. 2, 1968. 8 envelopes (Nos. 135-243) contain black and white negatives dated May 2, 1964 - Aug. 16, 1964. The remainder of the envelopes (Nos. 803-1313) are dated July 20, 1966 - Aug. 17, 1968. One envelope (No. 1436) is dated June 15, 1969. Five envelopes of negatives are without dates or numbers and have been assigned letters "A" - "E". The subjects of the negatives are every possible and imaginable occurrence in a small Ontario town such as Fergus. The collection has particular value in documenting in precise detail Canada's 1967 Centennial year. Nature in all its forms, and the course of the Grand River through the seasons, especially winter, are well represented. There is ample coverage of the Fergus Highland Games of 1966, 1967 and 1968. Most of the negatives were shot in the Fergus area, with a few in Elora, Belwood, Kitchener, Grimsby, Grand Bend, Toronto and Niagara Falls. The original order in which the envelopes arrived has been preserved in a Wordperfect datafile NEGATIV4.LST dated 1998 Mar 23. From this information, a table of envelopes has been generated, in numerical order, using the language on the envelopes. Using this table, an index has been constructed with some flexibility and interpretation, where confidence allows. Very occasionally spelling has been changed. Note that in the period 1964-1968, there was, in Fergus, only one public school ("P.S.") - now known as James McQueen Public School. The high school ("H.S."), now known as Centre Wellington District High School, served only Fergus, as Elora High School operated at that time as well. While no extraordinary effort has been made to further identify more cryptic notations, it has been established by the cataloguer that "Oreen" is Oreen Campbell, and that "Laura" and "Laura Jane" are members of the Templin family. The Fergus News-Record Negatives Fonds joins a substantial body of materials related to the Templin family and the Fergus News Record, donated earlier. |
