Mount Forest postcards, ca. 1903-1910, photograph and letter, ca. 1970. Five postcards related to the village of Mount Forest, Ontario, as well as one photograph, ca. 1970, with an accompanying letter. - ph 48439: Image of the large 2.5-storey brick house named "Ophir Hall" and grounds at 195 Birminham Street East, Mount Forest, at the corner of Fergus Street. Imprinted at base of image, "Ophir -- / -- Hall -- ". Sent to Miss Myrtle Little of Holstein, Ontario, from her friend Alice Cook, re. Vera and the train she was on. Post marked Mount Forest, 26 June 1903 [or 1908]. Publisher unidentified. This house is described as the residence of J. J. Cook in the book "Views of Mount Forest" by Skales & Chapman (published ca. 1910). According to Homer magazine (vol.18, 2011, pp. 45-48), the third floor of this house was removed in 1933, and Roy Grant purchased it in 1952. - ph 48440: Streetscape of Queen Street North, a rutted, tree-lined gravel road with sidewalk and fire hydrant, ca. 1910. Two buggies or vehicles visible on road in distance. Portions of houses visible along street. Imprinted at base of image, "Queen St. N. Mount Forest Ont.". Unused. Imprinted on reverse, "Genuine Photograph Mfg. by Photo Specialty Co. Streetsville, Can." [ See also ph 45736 ] - ph 48441: Oval seascape of a setting sun over a lake with distant shoreline, 1908. Imprinted lower left of lake, "Just as the Sun / [symbol = 'HS' in cartouche?] Went Down / Mt Forest". The lake may be nearby Pike Lake. Sent to Miss Luella Fischer of Elora from "Hazel" in Mount Forest, 05 July 1908, re. the train being late, the addressee visiting Arthur. Publisher unidentified. - ph 48442: Landscape with bridge over creek or river and rail fence in background, 1908. Imprinted lower right, "Black Bridge [symbol = 'HS' in cartouche?]. Sent to Miss Luella Fischer of Arthur from "Hazel" in Mount Forest, 05 August 1908, re. getting news from Elora, visiting, getting a boy to accompany the addressee to a dance at Pike Lake. Publisher unidentified. - ph 48443: Interior of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church showing view down the nave towards altar with elaborate Gothic revival altarpiece with niches and figures [four apostles?], ca. 1910. Imprinted in red at base of image, "Interior, R.C. Church, Mount Forest, Ont.". Unused. Published by the Pugh Manufacturing Company Limited of Toronto. - ph 48444: Black and white photograph of a threshing machine that was produced by Ernst Brothers of Mount Forest, as it appeared 18 April 1970. Group of men at left. Parked car partially visible in background at right. Inscribed in pencil on reverse, "Ernst Bros. / Mount Forest / 'New Favorite' / Ser. #3205 / At Clifford Lochart's Sale / Lot 8, Con. IX, Innisfil Tp. / Simcoe County / April 18, 1980". Stamped in black ink on reverse is name and address of Brian Baker of Thornton, Ontario. Accompanying photograph ph 48444 is: - item 1: Letter addressed to "Bruce" from Brian Baker of Thornton, Ontario, undated [ca. 1970]; typed; 1 page. It begins, "Please find enclosed photo of old Mount Forest Threshing Machine at Clifford Lockhart's sale near Barrie...". |
