Photograph, a bust-length portrait of James Kirby Secord (1835-1899) in military uniform, ca. 1863; signed at bottom, "Truly Yours / J. Kirby Secord / Capt. 77 [__?__]". James Kirby Secord was born 15 July 1835 to William Secord and Fanny Holden in Grantham Township, Lincoln County, Ontario. He fought for the Union Army during the American Civil War, as a captain with the 77th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry. In 1865, he married Mary Carleton in Brantford, Ontario, and they moved to Illinois. The 1870 Census shows him practicing as a physician in Elmwood, Illinois, where he lived with his young wife and children. He died in California on 13 February 1899.
