Date |
1882; ca. 1975 |
Description |
Typed transcript of letter originally written by Gavin Middleton of Elora, Ontario, April 1882, and transcribed ca. 1975. The typist has prefaced the transcript with some context, "In April 1882 Gavin Middleton sold his belongings at Auction in Elora and, with his wife, Jean Graham and adopted daughter, left for Manitoba. The following letter later appeared in the Elora Express [newspaper]". Two pages. The letter consists of Middleton describing his trip via the railway from Elora to Western Canada, and the notable things he saw and experienced en route. He makes mention of Winnipeg, Brandon, Emerson, and Rapid City in Manitoba, and the state of Minnesota. He spends the bulk of the letter describing issues encountered with the railway, dead animals, and in describing the town of Brandon, Manitoba, its streets, buildings, people, and continual issues with thick mud. Letter is written on Eaton's Correstable Bond paper, Berkshire, USA. [This letter precedes a diary, written 1882-1884, Elora, describing his homestead experience in Carnduff, Sask]. |
