Description |
75 photographs and postcards found in the Wellington County Home for the Aged in 1972 and 1976. Some have some identification written on back, others are unknown, but likely friends or family of former residents of the Wellington County Home for the Aged, or its earlier incarnation, the House of Industry and Refuge. Many of the photographs were found together in an envelope that indicated that they could be members of the Coady or Tomkins families. The record notes which photos these are, and for each photograph, the year that it was found in the Home is given. ph 1211: Exterior of Wellington County House of Industry and Refuge (later Wellington County Museum and Archives), ca. 1890. It shows wooden staircase and board walk leading to front entrance, front lawn, shrubbery, wooden fence, elderly man and young girl standing in doorway, mounted on brown paper stock (negatives and copy print filed with print). Standing beside her are Jim, James and Billy. Person and houses visible in background. They could be military, cadet, or boy scout uniforms. They are identified L-R as Pete Avender of British Columbia, and James, Billy, and Percy. Baby likely related to the Tomkins / Coady families; found 1976. ph 1227: Middle-aged couple identified as Eddie and Maggie, sitting in front of a grandfather clock and fireplace mantle, ca. 1945. Men are likely related to the Tomkins / Coady families. ph 1229: Gordon and Hazel Machin of Elora, with young daughter Berniece Machin, 07 August 1945. Gordon is wearing a military uniform. She is wearing dress, necklace, stockings, shoes, and has a bow in her hair. The dress has matching lace on the V-neck and cuffs; pleating on sleeves, shoulder and skirt. In June 2006 this was identified as the wash house steps at the House of Industry and Refuge. This woman also appears in ph 582, ph 1153, ph 2866, and ph 9276.
