| Description | Dickinson family of Elora, military records and photographs, ca. 1916-1922. Albert Stanley Dickinson was born in Elora, Ontario on 18 November 1892 to Daniel and Jennie Dickinson (nee Bruce). Stanley, known more familiarly as "Josh," grew up in Elora, and as a young man served in the Canadian Militia. In January 1916 he was living in Elora and working as a lineman for the Bell Telephone Company when he enlisted in the 153rd Wellington Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. After training in London, Ontario, he was deployed to England in March 1917 to continue training. In December 1917 he was posted to the 18th Overseas Battalion, and in August 1918 to the 8th Battalion. He was killed in action on 02 September 1918. The military report explains that "he was instantly killed by shrapnel during the advance on Cagnicourt". He left his estate to his mother, Jennie Dickinson. - item 1: Military records of Private Albert Standley Dickinson, 1916-1922. They include his attestation papers, medical history sheet, record of treatment for disease, record of promotions and transfers etc., casualty form, form of will, and other papers relating to his military career and death in the field. [ MU 1375 ] - ph 49858: Black and white photograph of cross-shaped wooden memorial marker at the grave of Private A. S. Dickinson at the Quebec British Cemetery at Pas de Calais near Cherisy, France, ca. 1920. Likes others visible behind, five embossed metal plates have been affixed to the marker. The top one has three numbers or letters. The second may read "1.0.28". The one at centre lists his number and name "928320 PTE. A. S. DICKINSON", the next "8TH CANADIANS." And the bottom plate his death date, "2-9-18". Inscribed on reverse, "II". Photographer unknown but may have been taken by a member of the Canadian Forces. [ STACKS ] - item 2: Form letter from King George V, Buckingham Palace, England, [ca. 1920]; re. enclosed "memorial of a brave life given for others in the Great War;" facimile signature; this note accompanied the death penny received by Daniel and Jennie Dickinson to commemmorate the service and death of their son, Stanley. She is standing with hands clasped in front of her, wearing a knitted shawl, spectacles, and the silver memorial cross on a ribbon around her neck. Photographer unknown. Inscribed on reverse in blue ink, "Jennie Bruce Dickinson / married to Daniel" and in pencil, "photo taken at 47 Surrey St / East Guelph Ontario", and in another hand, "5x7 5".
