SERIES 3: FERGUSSON / SMITHURST PAPERS, 1842-1893; 1992. - file 1: Letters addressed to Rev. John Smithurst, 1853-1866. - Item 1: Letter addressed to Rev. John Smithurst, Elora, containing account with Wm. G. Smith, Hudson's Bay House, London [England], 16 February 1853. Mr. Smith reports news of the Red River settlement and the death of Factor Donald Ross who had retired there from Norway House. The address portion contains several postmarks of interest. - Item 2: Letter with envelope addressed to Revd. John Smithurst, Elora, from Ann Norris, Toronto, containing an account of china and glassware purchased and shipped (with some apparent theft en route, for which she apologises), 21 Oct. 1853. The envelope contains several postmarks of interest. - Item 3: Envelope[only] addressed to Reverend J. Smithurst, Elora, with postal cancellations for Dundas, Guelph and Elora, 23 February 1855. - Item 4: Letter with envelope, addressed to Revd. John Smithurst, Leahurst, Minto, Harriston P.O., from D. Macdonald, who advises that "If convenient, a cheque for the balance of your a/c due to the Executors of the late Mr. Allan would be taken as a favor at present," 7 September 1859. - Item 5: Printed letter, addressed by hand to Rev. John Smithurst, Clifford, from J.M. Shaw, Editor and Proprietor of the Elora Observer, announcing a "Projected History of North Wellington," and asking for contributions from each Township, January 1866. - Item 6: Envelope [only] addressed to Rev. John Smithurst, "Lee Hurst," Clifford P.O., Minto, 16 Jan. 1866. - file 2: Diary, notebooks, 1884-1895. - Item 1: Diary, 1884. Inside front cover: "Rev. C.E. Thomson / Weston / Ont." Begins 1 January 1884. Last entry 28 December 1884, followed by 2 pages of addresses. Many of the entries are on Sundays, listing services at St. Phillips and St. Mark's, Carleton. - Item 2: Notebook, 1887. Probably the diary entries and accounts are those of Adelaide Elizabeth Thomson (1859-1944), the eldest child of The Rev. Charles Edward Thomson (1832-1903), an Anglican minister married to Margaret Geddes Gilkison (1837-1928). [See A2015.37.6] - Item 3: Notebook. accounts, 1890-1895. Inside front cover: "Rev. C.E. Thomson." Begins "Salaries 1890" ends 20 February 1895. The first few pages contain accounts for a small municipality ("Water," "Fire," "Office."), along with a critical assessment. Household accounts begin 1 June 1893. - file 3: "Reverend Charles Edward Thomson / 1832-1903 / Letters of a Victorian Family", compiled and with an introduction by Terry Brown, Peterborough, September 1992, 60 pages. Percy, Dundas, re the Title of West-half Lot 14, Con.1, Eramosa Twp.,10 June 1842. - Item 2: Letter addressed to Adam J. Fergusson of Guelph, Wellington District, from A. Gale, Hamilton, re Whyte's Estate, 5 Nov. 1844. |
