Description |
Oval, convex, colour paint and charcoal enhanced photograph on paper (.01), a bust-length portrait of Albert Stanley "Josh" Dickinson of Elora in military uniform, untitled, ca. 1917. He is looking straight at the viewer, wearing a slightly cocked kakhi-coloured cap with maple leaf insignia, and matching kakhi-coloured uniform with brass buttons. Pink colour has been added to his lips and cheeks, and his pupils have been blackened. Neutral green, brown, and yellow background. Photographer and artist unknown. The portrait is mounted under convex glass in a simple, oval brass metal frame (.02). ART H |

For the photograph on which this portrait is based, see ph 23809. Albert Stanley Dickinson was born in Elora, Ontario on 18 November 1892 to Daniel and Jennie Dickinson (nee Bruce). Stanley, known more familiarly as "Josh," grew up in Elora, and as a young man served in the Canadian Militia. In January 1916 he was living in Elora and working as a lineman for the Bell Telephone Company when he enlisted in the 153rd Wellington Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. After training in London, Ontario, he was deployed to England in March 1917 to continue training. In December 1917 he was posted to the 18th Overseas Battalion, and in August 1918 to the 8th Battalion. He was killed in action on 02 September 1918. The military report explains that "he was instantly killed by shrapnel during the advance on Cagnicourt". He is buried in the Quebec British Military Cemetery in Pas de Calais, France. |
