Provenance |
Ellen Stone Beeken (1921-2009) was an Elora-based artist. Her obituary, as published by the Graham Giddy Funeral Home, reads in part: "Artist, lab technician, matriarch. Died peacefully March 10, 2009 at Groves Memorial Hospital in Fergus, Ontario. Ellen was born in Huntingdon, West Virginia on November 30, 1921, and grew up in Hamilton, Ohio. After graduating with a BA from Miami University in Ohio, she moved to New York City and worked as a lab technician during the war. Later, she moved to Canada, and earned a specialist degree in art as applied to medicine (now "Master of Science in Biomedical Communications (MScBMC)"), at the University of Toronto. She married Philip Harold Melville in 1952, after he finished training as a physician. She lived with her family in Toronto, Elora, Timmins, Fergus, and then finally, by 1976, again in Elora. She and Phil were divorced in 1975. Ellen remained in the Elora area, where she continued to follow her passion for family, painting, sketching, nature, learning, community theatre, and books. She had an enquiring, generous, and critical nature, and she vigorously contributed to the local arts community for the rest of her days." |
