Description |
Mixed media on canvas titled "Anna and Oscar" by German-Canadian artist, Ulrike Ursel "Riki" Weiland (1943-2013), created in 2012. It consists of areas painted in oil and acrylic, onto which the artist has applied paper and fabric pieces. Predominantly rendered in hues of red, purple, and orange, the composition is divided horizontally into two planes. The lower and larger of the two planes includes a piece of lace, the image of a woman with hand on her hip, a small landscape on a sunny day, and a more sombre landscape of a couple walking away from a ruined building. The upper, mostly purple plane includes an image of clouds, with rays linking the clouds to the head of the woman with hand on her hip, in the plane below. Signed and dated lower right "Riki 2012". From the Estate of the artist. Artist Ulrike Ursel "Riki" Weiland was born in Germany on 15 August 1943. Ten years later, she immigrated to Canada with her parents, Oscar and Anna Weiland. She studied art at the Ontario College of Art, and at Cooper Union College. In 1967 she worked with other designers on Expo '67's Canadian pavilion. She moved to Fergus, Ontario, in 1998, and became involved with the Elora Arts Council. She then began studying sculpture under Beverly Cairns and Geoffrey Stevens. After moving to Elora, she focussed on more on abstract painting. Weiland has won many awards for her art. She passed away on 19 January 2013.
