Description |
Oval shaped metal rasp set on a slender flat metal shaft with a sloped bend. A series of horizonatal grooves create the cutting surface (used to rasp horse teeth). The shaft of the rasp mounts into a long round wooden handle with a brass collar. Handle is natural wood in colour. Hand-forged. Dated circa 1890-1900. |

Used by three McFadzean brothers who were veterinarians in Wellington Co.: James of Arthur, Alex of Fergus and later the donor's father, William B. of Fergus, born 1890. All graduated from the Veterianary College in Toronto. They practised in Wellington County. Most of their instruments were handmade by their father (Alexander) a blacksmith in Waldemar (Dufferin County). Their older sister Kate McFadzean graduated from the first nursing class at Groves Hospital in 1905. Circa 1890-1900. Alexander McFadzean Jr. died of the influenza epidemic in 1918. Alexander married the schoolteacher, Ida Walsh, in Waldemar. They had one daughter, Dorothy Dougan, (d.1997). |
