Donated by the artist to the Ellen Langlands Memorial Art Collection. Barry McCarthy is a Canadian artist who, in the 1980s, was living in Fergus, Ontario. In 1990, the artist provided the WCMA with the following information about himself: "Barry McCarthy was born in Deep River in 1951. he then moved with his parents to Thunder Bay at an early age, where he received his formal training, taking private lessons and [lessons] at school. After completing high school, he proceeded to expand his horizons [by] studying art at the University of Guelph where he obtained his Hons. B.A. in 1975. In 1976, he studied at Western University [i.e. the University of Western Ontario] where he received his Bachelor of Education degree and is presently [in 1990] teaching art as well as working on hsi own. At university, [McCarthy] explored such areas as sculpture, painting, drawing, and printmaking, but in 1975 he found his way back to his original love, watercolours, because of [their] speed and versatility. he later attempted...egg tempera, and has received several awards for his endeavours." He notes that, "there is a wide range of imagery in my work... I enjoy watching light pass over various surfaces. The abstract in space is a never-ending challenge, as is the achievement of texture, using anything from spray bottles to my own finger print. ... A good painter must avoid a systematic approach to paintning". McCarthy states that, "I loke to take a theme and push it to its limits. Various methods and materials are used and, when the spirit of a work is exhausted, then it’s time to move on to the next environment, situation, or feeling". |
