Description |
Black ink drawing, overlaid with plastic, on paper, by Canadian artist Paul McCusker, titled "Mounties Disclose More Names on Blacklist", 1980; it is a cartoon set within a black rectangular border, depicting two uniformed RCMP officers regarding a thick Bell Canada telepone directory; mountie on left holds directory and instructs the other to "Take this list of suspected suversives" to American and British intelligence agents; mountie on right wears a hat and looks down at directory; black background; signed and dated lower left, "P.McCUSKER© 80"; plastic with polka dot pattern has been cut in shapes of uniforms and adhered to paper to form the grey uniforms. This political cartoon was produced by Paul McCusker for the Fergus-Elora News Express newspaper, for whom he did freelance work in the 1970s and 1980s. During that period he lived in Guelph and in Fergus. Bearded at the time, he drew himself into many of his cartoons. In 2010, www.joeshusterawards.com published the following information about the artist, "Paul McCusker graduated from both the Illustration and Media Arts Cartooning programs at Sheridan College. He has been freelancing as a Cartoonist/Illustrator since 1976. First as a local cartoonist for the Guelph Life Newspaper and later for the Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star. Paul was also one of the Orb comic artists. Paul has worked in Educational Publishing and has Illustrated several Children and Young adult books. He also served as a courtroom artist in Canada’s most infamous "Bernardo Trial" for the Toronto Star. He was the artist on Owl Magazine’s long running "Mighty-Mites" comic strip (Written by Harold Eastman.) from 1993 until 2000. His latest endeavour is for Forrec, a company specializing in entertainment facilities, designing murals and signage for Universal Studios Dubai’s upcoming theme park. Paul continues to freelance and occasionally finds time to muck about with personal projects such as, the Spudniks, Rodent Noir, as well as painting and figure drawing." |
