- ART 1233A: Untitled pen and black ink drawing on white paper, shaded with graphite pencil, by Canadian artist, Mervyn Alfred "Bun" Morley (1927-2011), undated [ca. 2000]. It depicts a bird's eye view of a Canadian National Railway locomotive 2526 entering the town of Palmerston, Ontario, in the early to mid-20th century. It is pulling a car labeled "C.N. / 471512". Behind locomotive is a building and silo or water tower with vertical lettering "PALMERSTON". In background at left is Palmerston Railway Station, metal bridge over tracks, other railway structure, and three deciduous trees. Inscribed in pencil below image at left, "This locomotive would haul the heavy trains / for the North (of Palmerston) carloads, plus empty / box cars from grain loadign at Owen Sound. / This way Frt was in service until the 1950's / when it was discontinued. This was like / the rest of the rail service." Inscribed in pencil below image at right, "Stratford way Frt daily / Except Sunday. Switches / the communities between / Stratford and Palmerston. / also has car loads for the / communities north of Palmerston. / The way frt will handle the / empities for the roads / connection at the US. border / at Buffalo and Niagara Falls / (LV, DLW, NYC, and DH.) / (Listowel, Newton, Brunner and / Milverton and Gowanstown)" - ART 1233B: On reverse side of ART 1233A; it is a pencil sketch of a locomotive on the tracks, facing left; incomplete, unsigned and undated [ca. 2000]. Mervyn Alfred Morley was born 28 June 1927 to William Alfred Morley (1886-1965) and Lottie Evelyn (nee Blanch, 1904-1993). Known to many by the nickname "Bun," Mervyn grew up in Palmerston, Ontario. His father had been born and raised in Palmerston and had a career with the railway. For many years Mervyn "Bun" Morley lived in Listowel where Canada Voters Lists describe him as an "inspector" from 1962-1963, as a "foreman" in 1968, and as "office worker" in 1972. The latter list gives his wife's name as Loreen. Bun Morley passed away in Listowel on 27 May 2011. At the time he was married Agnes "Dolly" Barton, and was survived by several children. |
