Description |
An untitled black ink over pencil drawing on paper (.19) of houses in Elora, Ontario, by Canadian artist Ellen Stone Beeken (1921-2009); the page has been roughly divided into two halves; on the right side the artist has created a pen and ink drawing over pencil of the one and a half storey house with two dormers at 61 Victoria Street at Water Street, surrounded by leafy trees; steps with railing lead up the hill to the front door; beneath this drawing she has written in pencil and ink " 'Bleak House ' / Finlayson - 1848 (?) - Victoria & Walnut / Marston / Thompson"; on the left side of the page the artist first did a pencil drawing of a brick house with gable at 22 Metcalfe Street at Carlton Place. This she has partially covered by pasting over it a small photocopy of a pen and ink drawing dated lower right "April 77" of the stone house at 55 Victoria Street, with neighbouring houses visible in background; text printed on photocopy at lower left reads "[???] Inn / on Victoria St., Elora"; written in pink ink at top right of photocopy, "Wa / Carriage Works / Wagon maker 1865 / Harness Maker / (Dave / Master)"; the portion in brackets she later crossed out with pencil; written in pencil beneath photocopy, "Bell house / 1870 / carriage works & wagon maker / 1865 (alex Walker) / Italianate)". Provenance |
Ellen Stone Beeken (1921-2009) was an Elora-based artist. Her obituary, as published by the Graham Giddy Funeral Home, reads in part: "Artist, lab technician, matriarch. Died peacefully March 10, 2009 at Groves Memorial Hospital in Fergus, Ontario. Ellen was born in Huntingdon, West Virginia on November 30, 1921, and grew up in Hamilton, Ohio. After graduating with a BA from Miami University in Ohio, she moved to New York City and worked as a lab technician during the war. Later, she moved to Canada, and earned a specialist degree in art as applied to medicine (now "Master of Science in Biomedical Communications (MScBMC)"), at the University of Toronto. She married Philip Harold Melville in 1952, after he finished training as a physician. She lived with her family in Toronto, Elora, Timmins, Fergus, and then finally, by 1976, again in Elora. She and Phil were divorced in 1975. Ellen remained in the Elora area, where she continued to follow her passion for family, painting, sketching, nature, learning, community theatre, and books. She had an enquiring, generous, and critical nature, and she vigorously contributed to the local arts community for the rest of her days." |
