A red embroidered Signature Quilt on a white background dated to 1939. The quilt has thirty red-embroidered flower shapes. Each flower has a name embroidered in the centre, with a name on each of the eight petals for a total of 270 names. The names appear to be embroidered by the same person. It is hand-quilted in white around each flower and it is quilted with slightly smaller flower shapes, on the white backing, between the flowers. Embroidered in red in the centre of the quilt is "Boys' Own Mission Band, Rockwood 1939 Ontario". |

Provenance |
This quilt was a fundraiser for the Boys' Own Mission Band at Rockwood Presbyterian Church. Ten cents was given for each name to be embroidered on the quilt. It was embroidered by Mrs. Ada Lambert and remained in her possession until her death in the 1980s. Two church members told the Museum that at this time (1939), Presbyterians did not use raffles as fundraisers because it was seen as gambling. Ada Lambert gave the quilt to the donor's mother, Winnie Hilts, who was Ada's friend and neighbour. Winnie Hilts died in July 2004. The names on the quilt were all members of Rockwood Presbyterian Church, either residents of the village or farming families from the surrounding area. |
