Provenance |
Elizabeth Jane Elliott (née Davenport, 1852-1923) was the wife of Simon Elliott (1843-1910). Between 1881-1891, she and her husband and their family moved from Maryborough Township to Harriston, Ontario, where Simon worked as a grocer. Simon died in Harriston in 1910. Elizabeth Jane Elliott died in West Luther Township on 04 July 1923. The donor is a relative of Elizabeth Jane Elliott. According to the donor, many of the Elliott family appear in the 1879 [sic, 1877] atlas of Wellington County. Places the donor heard associated with the family included Arthur, Palmerston, and Mount Forest. The donor noted that Hugh Elliott, son of Simon and Elizabeth Jane, was a druggist, and did not know when he arrived in Tamworth, Ontario, but that he had placed an ad in the Christ Church History in 1915. Tamworth is just north of Napanee. Catherine Elliott, sister of Hugh (a widower) also came to Tamworth to keep house for him. While here, she met Fred Reid, a farmer from Reidville, which is just south of Tamworth. They were married on 07 February 1917 at St. George's Cathedral in Kingston. About 1918, Hugh Elliott married Maude Woods, daughter of George Woods and Jennie Lochhead. The Woods home and business (cheese box manufacturer) was south of Tamworth near the grist mill. After their marriage, Hugh and Maude Elliott returned to his home area. The donor notes that "Georgina Elliott and Eveline Turner supplied [me with this] information". ART 1021 is a companion piece to ART 1020. |
