The designer and production of the 4-H commemorative quilt was Pat Hooker. She wrote the following story on the quilt (November 15, 2013): "Because it was 100 years of 4H in Wellington County in 2013 the Arthur Agricultural Society decided at their annual meeting in January 2012 to have as their theme for the fall fair 2013 "4H In Our Community." I was getting ready to put the kits together for the quilt block challenge for the Arthur fair in September 2012. Janice Walsh a Director and I thought blocks done with buildings would be interesting. This was our fifth quilt block challenge and our fifth quilt to be raffled off. I had no idea at that time how it was going to be put together, I made up kits with the instructions and the beige background you see in each block. I asked for houses, barns, schools, churches. I had mentioned to a few people that I had hoped some would do actual buildings around Arthur and as you see on the quilt some did just that. Judy Truax from Mount Forest made the Arthur Anglican church, Betsy Benham from Damascus made the Damascus Community Centre, Joyce Schnurr of Damascus made her house, Marilyn Theruer of Arthur made her house and Elizabeth Duggan Litch made her house in Elora; this made for an interesting quilt. The blocks were handed in at the fair in September 2012 and judged and prizes were handed out to the top three. Prize money was donated by the quilt shop. When I received all the blocks back I had no clue how I was going to put it together till January 2013. I spread them out on the floor as I had many times before and decided I needed to add what I call fillers between the blocks and if I put them in rows across it would look like our farms, churches and villages on the concession roads. I started out building trees, and I was lucky enough to get some actual 4H material from Janice Walsh, and I made little 4H signs to appliqué on trees and buildings. I added the cows and chickens and made some barns into horse barns by adding horses; I added the tractors and school buses. One house was small and didn't really work out with the other larger ones so I added quilts on a fence and made it a quilt shop, I also added a clothes line between house and barn with quilts and of course it needed our flag. What I got back was just 10 inch square blocks. I did all the fillers and the extras to the quilt. It was necessary to piece the strips between the rows so the quilt became long enough for a bed. I added farm related pictures. I tried to place the blocks from smallest from the top to largest at the bottom to give the quilt depth and interest. The machine quilting was done by Melanie McDougal of Fergus, ON. Tickets were sold and a draw was made on September 8, 2013. Jacqueline Tate's lucky ticket was drawn. This quilt I think represents most 4H clubs. These quilts would not be possible with out these ladies entering every year into the quilt block challenge and I think they should be very proud to be a part of this very special quilt." |
