Postcard collection of Ernest Awrey, Erin Township, 1906-1917. The following postcards were removed from an album. A note taped inside the album read: "This Post Card Album was used in 1900-20. Present owner - Ernest Awrey". All postcards are in colour unless otherwise noted. Ernest Gideon Nathaniel Awrey was (1900-1991) the son of Leonard Awrey (1867-1959) and Ann Reed (Mrs. Leonard Awrey) (1873-1951). Leonard Awrey farmed at Concession 2, Lot 28 E1/2 in Erin Township, near Mimosa. Ernest had one sister Elise Lauretta Handley (nee Awrey) (1896-1984). Ann Reed had two sisters and two brothers; she received several postcards from her sisters Martha Ellen Root (1871-1922) and Margaret Ada Marshall (1881-1960). Margaret is the mother is Hazel Marshall and Ethel Marshall who Ernest receives a number of postcards from. He also receives postcards from his cousin Travis Awrey who is the son of Henry Awrey, his father's brother. 1906 - ph 56955: Postcard of a view of Dundurn Castle and Park, dated 22 May 1906. Addressed to Master Ernest Awrey c/o Mr. Leonard Awrey of Mimosa from Ethel [Marshall]. Mentions grandma is well. 1907 - ph 56956: Postcard of a view of the water fountain in Gore Park, Hamilton, ON, postmarked 1907. Addressed to Ernie Awrey of Mimosa from Hazel. Asks how he is enjoying his holidays and hopes he is having lots of fun. 1908 - ph 56957: Postcard of a white and a red rose, postmarked 29 July 1908. Addressed to Mr. Leonard Awrey of Mimosa from M. B. - ph 56958: Postcard of a farm house with the saying "The place where you are treated the best and grumble the most. Home Sweet Home.", dated 9 July 1908. Addressed to Mrs. Leonard Awrey of Mimosa from M. E. N. Discusses crops, other family members, and thanks her for the pictures in her previous letter. - ph 56959: Postcard of a John Innes painting of two cowboys on horses lassoing a bull, postmarked 04 August 1908. Addressed to Master Ernie Awrey c/o Mr. Leonard Awrey of Mimosa from Elmer. Told him he received his picture and tells him he has been sick again. - ph 56960: Postcard of a still from the comedy "The Road to Yesterday", dated 05 December 1908. Addressed to Mrs. Leonard Awrey of Mimosa from her sister Martha. Letting her know that the folks had arrived home on Monday after they visited Orton. 1909 - ph 56961: Postcard of Horseshoe Falls from Goat Island, Niagara Falls, dated 30 April 1909. Addressed to Mrs. Leonard Awrey of Mimosa from her sister Lucy. Lucy was told to write and tell her sister that she would be able to come down on Sunday. - ph 56962: Postcard of first house in Guelph, also known as the Priory which was located near John Galt Park on Woolwich Street, it was torn down in 1926, postcard dated 18 May 1909. Addressed to Mr. Leonard Awrey of Mimosa from a nephew known as L.L. of 37 Glasgow Street in Guelph. - ph 56963: Postcard of Naval parade leaving Canadian Licks, Sault Ste. Marie, Canada, postmarked 28 June 1909. Addressed to Mr. Leonard Awrey of Mimosa from Percy and Marg. Discusses travel on the road to Moosejaw. - ph 56964: Cartoonish postcard of a women talking to a young boy on the riverbank, the text below them reads "Old Lady:- 'Don't you know it's wicked to fish on Sunday? I wonder what your father would say about it?' Boy:-'You'd betted ask him ma.am; that's him further up the bank.'" Addressed to Harry Robinson c/o Leonard Awrey of Mimosa from an anonymous friend. The postcard reads: "Hello Harry, How did you get home from the garden party? I was sorry you did not come home with me. Addressed to Harry Robinson c/o Leonard Awrey of Mimosa. No note or sender. - ph 56967: Postcard of a women and her house keeper standing at the window, the caption reads "'Whatever are you doing?' Sure, Mum ye told me to pull down the blind'", dated 20 September 1909. Addressed to Mr. Leonard Awrey of Mimosa from a niece or nephew in Guelph. Mentions that someone is going to have an operation for appendicitis. - ph 56968: Postcard of a dead turkey with its feet tied up leaning on a basket, the caption reads "Thanksgiving Day", dated 22 October 1909. Addressed to Mrs. Leonard Awrey of Mimosa from her sister Martha of Hamilton. - ph 56969: Halloween postcard of the devil writing a menu, there is bowl of fruit above and all the fruit have faces. Addressed to Mater Ernie Awrey of Mimosa from Elsie of Ottawa. Mentions that Helen and Travis are expecting to do great pranks on Halloween night. - ph 56970: Postcard of The Adams Furniture Company Limited building in Toronto, postmarked 17 November 1909. Addressed to Mr. Leonard Awrey of Mimosa from The Adams Furniture Company Limited. Standard postcard asking if he would like their new catalogue. - ph 56971: Postcard of a father, and his two children one is holding a dog and the other is sitting on his top hat, the caption reads "Oh Willy, the hat is meant for the other end of the body!", dated 22 December 1909. Addressed to Master Ernie Awrey of Mimosa from Hazel of Acton. Harold writes that he has been looking for a letter from Ernie since Easter and hopes to see him at Fergus. - ph 57027: Postcard with a ship on the front, identified as Cunard R. M. Mauretania, addressed to Mr. L. Awrey of Orton from her niece Alice, postmarked 02 June 1915. Alice writes that they will visit on Sunday. - ph 57028: Postcard with a colourized image of Homewood Sanitarium in Guelph ON, dated 01 September 1915. Addressed to Leonard Awrey Esp. from his brother Henry. He discusses Leonard meeting "four of us father, mother, Travis and myself" at the station on Wednesday. - ph 57029: Christmas postcard addressed to Mrs. Leonard Awrey of Orton from her sister Margaret, postmarked 24 December 1914. - ph 57030: Christmas postcard addressed to Mrs. Leonard Awrey of Orton from her niece Susie B., postmarked 30 December 1914. Letting her know that she will be going to Tillies tomorrow and hopes to see Ann and her family there. She also notes to "excuse the card". 1916 - ph 57031: Postcard with a colourized image of the Tan and Gold Dining Room at the Hotel Oakland in Oakland California, dated 15 March 1916. Addressed to Mrs. Leonard Awrey of Orton from her sister Maratha Marshall of Hamilton. Martha is writing to let her sister know that everyone is okay and she walked home with Elise (Ann's daughter). - ph 57032: Postcard with a colourized image of the one of the many large sample rooms at the Hotel Oakland in Oakland California, dated 26 April 1916. Addressed to Mrs. Leonard Awrey of Orton from her sister Maratha Ellen Marshall of Hamilton. Martha thanks for her for letter on the 22nd and says father is busy but will write soon. - ph 57033: Postcard of a colourized image of sheep grazing in a field addressed to Mrs. Leonard Awrey of Orton from a friend, Mrs. Robert Walker, dated 11 May 1916. Mrs. Walker writes how she got home. Has postmarks from both Mount Forest and Elora. - ph 57034: Postcard with a colourized image of Trinity Church and Rectory in Galt, ON, postmarked 22 June 1916. Addressed to Mrs. Leonard Awrey from her niece Maggie. Maggie writes that she was sorry to disappoint her aunt that they did not come on Sunday. 1917 - ph 57035: Postcard with stereotyped cartoon of two African American children on a motorcycle above them is a pink flag with the word "Hamilton" and the text below reads "Lawd a massy! Dis am some swift town", dated 12 April 1917. Addressed to Elise Awrey of Orton from an Aunt with the initials L. R. - ph 57038: Postcard with a colourized photograph of a five number of people of African American decent standing around a table that has a possum on it and some watermelons, there is also a dog at the foot of the table and beside him are three larger watermelons, postmarked 26 August 1917. Addressed to Mrs. Leonard Awrey of Orton from niece M.B. S.S. #14 Erin Township - ph 57039: A unused black and white postcard with the class of S. S. #14 Erin Township, ca. 1906. On the back the following have been identified: Ernest Awrey, front row 4th from the right, and Elsie Handley (nee Awrey) back row 4th from the right. Elsie and Ernest are brother and sister.
