Description |
Laura McLelland (1916-2009) of West Garafraxa Township and Salem, photographs and documents, ca. 1875-1995. Richard McLelland (1834-1899) and his wife Agnes McLelland (nee McGladdery) farmed in West Garafraxa Township. Of their children, their son Albert McLelland (1859-1930) settled on the west half of Lot 20, Concession 5, West Garafraxa Township, not far from his parents' farm on Lot 22. Albert married Phyllis Keast (1873-1954), also of West Garafraxa Township, and they had two daughters, Elma (1908-1933) and Laura (1916-2009). After Albert's untimely death in the winter of 1930, Phyllis and her children moved into a stone house on Geddes Street in Salem. While living there, Elma McLelland, an artist, was killed at the age of 25, after falling from her horse while returning from Fergus. Elma's sister, Laura, who compiled the photographs and documents below, later moved to Guelph where she worked as manager of the Colonial Dress Manufacuring Company, and as manager of McGregor's Sports Wear. Laura passed away in Guelph in 2009. The photographs listed below show life on the McLelland family farm, and friends and family and around Salem and beyond. Many of them show Elma and Laura as teenagers, having fun with their friends. File 1: Photograph album, 1908-1943.
