The following three photographs are a series by the same, unidentified, photographer, of the Grand Trunk Railway wreck at Gourock, Guelph Township, that took place at 6:15am on 22 September 1906. In the accident, a mixed train out of Guelph, being pulled by locomotive 299, colided head on with a special fruit train being pulled by locomotive 455. The upside down tender of GTR 299 is visible in these images, as is destroyed GTR box car 13177. The wreck instantly killed Thomas Farley of Palmerston, who was the engineer of the mixed train, and a couple of days later, freight fireman Cecil Bright of Hamilton succumbed to his injuries. As the shock was absorbed by the front end of both trains, freight cars at the rear of the trains remained on the tracks and all passengers escaped unscathed, as did conductor Edgar John Hunt of Palmerston. Engineer Reid of Hamilton and brakeman Cecil Andrews of London where horribly scalded and otherwise injured. Filed with the photographs are articles about the wreck from the Guelph Evening Mercury and the Guelph Weekly Mercury, as well as information provided by CNR historian, Don McQueen, about the history of the engines and box car involved in the wreck. - ph 44604: View from a hilltop of crowds of people observing and helping with the Grand Trunk Railway train wreck at Gourock, Guelph Township, on 22 September 1906; photographer unknown. - ph 44605: View of mangled engines and box cars of Grand Trunk Railway wreck at Gourock, Guelph Township, 22 September 1906; box car with text "GRAND TRUNK / 13177" in foreground; bystanders on hillock in background; photographer unknown. - ph 44606: Close view of mangled engine and upturned tender 299 from Grand Trunk Railway wreck at Gourock, Guelph Township, 22 September 1906; photographer unknown.
