Waind family documents and photographs, ca. 1861-2010. The documents and photographs below were retained by members of the Waind family of Elora, Ontario, but relate also to their friends and relatives, specifically the Maitland and Boyes families. Hugh Waind was born and raised in Elora, and grew up to work in the insurance industry. In March, 1957, having worked with J. C. Fasken for about four years, he purchased J. C. Fasken's insurance business. Hugh and his wife, Phyllis Waind, lived in Elora. SERIES 1: Waind family records, 1861-1995. File 1: Correspondence, ca. 1918-1976. [ MU 1375 ] - item 1: Envelope addressed to "Miss Maitland / 'Athelstane' / Elora / Ont.", and postmarked 11 November 1918. - item 2: Letter addressed to Hughie Waind of Elora, from Jack Scott [of Elora], Royal Canadian Air Force, in Europe, 21 May 1945; re. playing ball, playing in boats on the Grand River, VE Day celebrations, flying stunts over Elora by pilot George Boudreau, fighter jets in Europe, Canadian prisoner of war, hello to family; air letter inscribed both sides. [ see ph 49702, below ]; includes photocopy, ca. 2000. - item 3: Photocopy of a letter to Hugh Waind of Elora from Russell Daly of Guelph, 31 August 1949; re. Congratulations on quick thinking and actions that averted a major fire in Elora; copied over part of the letterhead of the aforementioned letter are two Toronto Star newspaper clippings, both of which feature a photograph of Hugh Waind by the newspaper's photographer, Camidge. One is titled "Action of Boy and Brigade narrowly averts Serious Fire," 24 Aug. 1949; the other is titled "Naphtha Gas Aflame / Boy Prevents Blaze"; 18[?] Aug. [1949]. - item 4: Photocopy of a letter to Hugh Waind, Elora, from Henry A. Hosking, MP, 03 Sept. 1949; re. offering commendation for Waind's actions which caused himself injury to protect the village of Elora from a major fire. On letterhead of Hosking Motors of Guelph. - item 5: Photocopy of a letter to Master Hugh Waind of Elora from J.R. MacDonald, Reeve of Elora, 17 November 1949; re. thanks for his bravery performed while an employee of the Elora Hardware Store, in saving Elora's business district from fire. - item 6: Christmas card from Katharine A. Marston of Elora, 1952. Printed on grey paper in which silver sparkles are embedded, it features an image of the Elora Mill with text in red beneath it "Christmas Greetings". Inside, a sheet of information about the mill and the Fraser family who ran it, has been affixed to the card with a 1952 Canada Easter Seal. Imprinted verse by Charles Dickins and name of Katharine A. Marston printed in red. - item 7: Envelope from the Rexall drug store of F. J. Capell "druggist, stationer and optician" in Elora, Ontario, ca. 1955. It describes him as a "dealer in drugs, stationery, fancy goods, phonographs and records, kodaks and supplies, wall paper, postcards, etc., Patterson's Chocolates". Features two smoking or flaming amphorae. - item 8: Letter addressed to Miss Alison M. Maitland of Elora from lawyers Wilson & Jack of Fergus, 03 Dec. 1964; re. the estate of Mary Minerva Maitland; 1 page. - item 9: Handwritten note signed by Mary Waind concerning Elora, ca. 1970; it reads, "the arena built in 1920 - burned in 1933 / at 75 Chalmers St / Grandpa Maitland helped / build it. It was a group / effort of the men of the town / Mary Scott remembered / seeing the fire before school / Mom said they didn't know / cause - kids smoking? There / is a stone foundation in / the back yard near oak. / front yard under beech / tree." - item 10: Greeting card addressed to "Dear Hughie" from Catherine M Dickinson, 14 June 1976; re. enclosed cheque to cover insurance policy, idea of Hugh Waind, Jim Kerr and others placing benches throughout the village of Elora for the benefit of Elizabeth Cole, Lucy Rogers and others. Front of card features a reproduction of a pen and ink drawing by Audrey Loney of the two-storey stone building at 56 Mill Street West, Elora. Stamped on reverse, "Catherine Dickinson / Antiques and Now Things / Elora, Ontario…". File 2: Waind family photographs, Elora, Ontario, ca. 1875-1970. Each is black and white unless otherwise noted. She is smiling, wearing a white cotton dress with eyelets, and is barefoot, seated on an embroidered runner. Photo by J.W. Webster of Elora. Aileen May Power was born in Wellington County on 17 May 1899 to William Power and Annie Griffin. Inscribed on reverse, "Aileen Power / (grand daughter of / Mrs. Griffin who / lived at the farm / (J. M.'s) / MAITLAND / & later had a store in Elora". - ph 49693: Copy print photograph, ca. 2010, of Jane Wissler (nee Robertson) of Salem, standing in a garden, smiling and holding a flower, ca. 1906. Photographer unknown. She passed away 03 June 1907 at the age of 80. Inscribed at base of copy print, "Mrs Sem Wissler"; two copies, the smaller of the two mounted in a cream-paper frame on which is written, "Hello dear". - ph 49694: Copy print photograph, ca. 2010, of a photograph of the façade of Knox Presbyterian Church in Elora, originally taken in 1906. Original inscribed, "Many happy returns of / March 21st / 1906 J.F."; Copy print inscribed, "Knox Presbyterian / Elora". - ph 49695: Photo montage portrait of the Elora Rocks Lacrosse Club, 1907. It consists of an arrangement of oval portraits of identified team members in their club jerseys, flanked by scenes of the Elora Gorge. At centre are photographs of their trophy and of their banner. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Connon and Jean Keith of Elora. She married woolen manufacturer, James Grant, in 1875. In the 1891 census, they and their children were listed as living in a 9-room, two storey brick house in Chesley, Ontario. In that of 1911, James and Elizabeth were still living in Chesley, with their 27-year old daughter Elizabeth and their maid. Photographer unknown. Inscribed on reverse, "? Inscribed at top of image, "St John's Church / Elora" and at bottom, "Center Jean Foote Maitland / d 1946". - ph 49704: Wedding portrait of Gord Dickinson of Elora, his bride Wilma Mitchell[?] of Fergus, and their attendants, Fergus, 28 April 1956. They are posed indoors in front of a wood-paneled wall, landscape painting, and floral curtains. Young man at far left with pompadour is Blair 'Ducky' Costin. Hugh Waind is the man second from right with hands crossed. A sticky note affixed to the photo notes that Gord Dickinson "ended up as bank manager in Delhi." Bookcase behind them. Inscribed on reverse, "65696 / Jim & Berna Kerr / Butcher." File 3: Digital copies of negatives of Elora and Salem, ca. 1870-1915. Original negatives were likely produced ca. 1915; they were composed of very degraded non-safety film which was buckling and had a strong smell of decomposition, so were returned to the donor. The digital copies listed below were scanned as TIFs, 400 dpi, 12" wide. They appear not to be original negatives, but rather old copy negatives, i.e. photographs of paper photographs. A new Church of St. John the Evangelist would open across the street from this house in 1875, but was not yet built at the time this photograph was taken. Two other homes also visible. By the 2000s, this area was being used as one of the launching points by "tubers," i.e. people who float down to the low level bridge on inflated inner tubes. SERIES 2: Boyes family records, ca. 1915-1953. Matthew R. B. Boyes (1880-1953) was born in Dumfries, Scotland, and spent the first part of his life in Scotland and England. in the early 20th century, he emigrated to Canada, and his obituary notes that upon arriving, he first worked at Burt Brothers' store in Elora. While in Elora, he began working for the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) and remained involved with that organization throughout his life. When he married Jean Hanna (1887-1949) of Belwood in 1921, he described himself as YMCA Secretary from Winnipeg. In 1924 the couple left for Widen, West Virginia, and told border guards that their most recent address was Toronto. They lived in Widen for many years while Boyes continued his work for the Industrial YMCA. During the Second World War, Boyes worked with the YMCA War Services in Canada and the couple moved around the country. After Jean Hanna's death in 1949, Boyes worked with the Railroad YMCA out of Brownville, Maine. Matthew and Jean Boyes are buried in the Elora Cemetery. File 1: Newspaper clippings, 1949-1953. She has short hair, and is wearing an almost off the shoulder satin and gossamer dress.
