Letters and printed materials, ca.1870-1995, related to the Foster and Short families, Grand Valley and West Garafraxa Township, and to Leone Hinds (nee Foster). There are other materials related to the Foster and Short families in the Museum collection (1988.79 and 1999.13) and Archives (A1998.13 and A2012.26). SERIES 1: PRINTED MATERIALS, 1913-1924. - file 1: Mrs. Mary Wood-Allen, What A Young Woman Ought To Know (Philadelphia / London / Toronto: Vir Publishing Co., 1913) [MU 1249] - file 2: Thomas Walton Galloway, Love and Marriage: Normal Sex Relations (New York / London: Funk and Wagnalls Co., 1924). Owned by Martha Ellen Foster and Beatrice Zina Foster. SERIES 2: NOTES, CORRESPONDENCE, ca.1870-1995. Subseries 1: Various, ca.1870-1988. - file 1: Envelope (only) with return address: "Henry Wm Peterson / Clerk of the Peace and / Crown Attorney / For the County of Wellington / Guelph - Ontario."' [Peterson (1831-1913) held this office 1866-1913; handwritten note on front, in ink: "Alex Milne - $17.80 ..." ca.1870. - file 2: Envelope (only), addressed to Robert E.J. Rodger, 138 Merton St., Toronto. The envelope is from the Department of the Naval Service, Ottawa, is registered, and bears the initials: "O.H.M.S." It is postmarked 30 and 31 March 1918. - file 3: Newspaper clipping regarding animals on stamps issued by Canada Post, 14 Oct. 1988. Subseries 2: Foster / Short family, 1910-1983. Fred R. Short (1899-1990) was the son of William and Eva Short of Metz, West Garafraxa Township. Martha Ellen ("Nellie") Foster (1899-date) was the daughter of William and Annie Foster of Grand Valley, East Luther Township. They married in 1930 and farmed near Arthur. - file 1: Foster / Short family correspondence, 1910-1983. - Item 1: Envelope (only) addressed to Mrs. William Short, Sec. of Women's Institute, Metz, postmarked Ospringe, 29 July 1910. - Item 2: Envelope (only) from the Dead Letter Office, Canada Post Office Dept., addressed to Nellie Foster, 300 Pape Ave., [Toronto], postmarked 26 Nov. 1919. - Item 3: Envelope (only) addressed to Fred R. Short, R.R. No.3, Arthur, Ont.; on reverse, letters R.S.V.P.; postmarked 12 Sept. 1927 - Item 4: Letter from Fred [Short], Metz, to Miss Nellie Foster, Grand Valley. He observes "Well, Nellie, this milking seems like a long tedious job now no farmerette to help ..."; he includes news of family and their movements and his bringing back the heifer calf in a sleigh, 9 Dec. 1929. - Item 5: Letter addressed to Fred Short, R.R. Metz, sending condolences on the death of his mother and noting it was a keen disappointment to miss her funeral due to the icy roads, from Will, Jean and Fraser Hanna, Elora, 13 March 1935. - Item 6: Envelope (only) addressed to Fred Short, R.R. #3, Arthur; postmarked Guelph, 7 July 1936. - Item 7: From W.S. Buschlen, Postmaster, notice of registered article for Fred Short, R.R. 3, Arthur, postmarked 27 July 1936. - Item 8: Letter to Nellie and Fred [Short] signed "Mother," Grand Valley, 27 Jan. 1938. - Item 9: Letter to Nellie, Fred [Short] and family, signed 'Mother / Mrs. William Foster," Grand Valley; note in pencil: "Nell Short was caring for children at risk in 1938;" dated 13 March 1938. - Item 10: Letter to Nellie and Fred [Short], signed "Mother," G[rand] V[alley], 11 Oct. 1940. - Item 11: Letter to Nellie and Fred [Short], signed "Mother," postmarked Grand Valley, 23 Dec. 1940. - Item 12: Letter to Nellie and Fred [Short], signed "Mother," G[rand] V[alley], undated. - Item 13: Letter to Nellie and Fred [Short], signed "Mother," G[rand] V[alley], 17th Feb. 1941. - Item 14: Letter to Nellie and Fred [Short], signed "Mother," Grand] Valley], 12th March 1941. - Item 15: Envelope (only) addressed to Miss Jennie D. Short, 1914 Bloor Street West, Toronto, from J.L. Gregson Township of West Garafraxa, Belwood. The return address design contains a sheaf of wheat below a bull and the words "Township of West Garafraxa;" postmarked 2 June 1942. - Item 16: Christmas card, with crest of Government of Ontario, addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Short, R.R. 3, Arthur, from John and Lillie Root, ca.1955. [John Root served as MPP from 1951-1961, when he was invited to serve on the Ontario Water Resources Commission]. - Item 17: Envelope (only) addressed to Mr. and Mrs. W.P. Foster, Elora, postmarked Elora, 18 Dec. 1979. - Item 18: Envelope (only) addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Short & Lorne, R.R.#1, Arthur; N0G 1A0; postmarked 2 Nov. 1982. - Item 19: Letter from Canada Post, apologising for damage to a letter (envelope only) from I.M. Wang, Guelph, addressed to Mr.and Mrs. P. Foster, 203 Colborne St., Elora, 12 Dec. 1983. Subseries 3: Leone Hinds, notes, correspondence, 1926-1995. - file 1: Journal of Nellie Short (nee Foster), 1926; 1935-1941; 1962. Includes a few newspaper clippings, but mainly poems, some with authors named, some without, and probably written by Nellie Short; see: "My Mother," and "To Freda Eleanore - What Would She Be Like?" - the poem she wrote about her dead infant daughter, 29 March 1937). At back: diagrams and names of fruit trees in the orchard, one dated 1962; includes poem sent to Miss Nellie Foster, Grand Valley: "To My Doctor and Nurses" by Edna M. Mitchell, Lord Dufferin Hospital, Orangeville, 26 Nov. 1926. - file 2: Notebook, with illustration of dog and young girl with racquet on front. Two pages with thoughts regarding friends; another page titled "Sermons 1947" names Rev. Mr. Horton. The handwriting is very similar to that of the journal of Nellie Short (above). - file 3: Notes by Leone Hinds from the diary of John Finlay Williams (1864-1953), Metz, West Garafraxa Township. The notes are of births, marriages and deaths and funerals of friends, neighbours, acquaintances of John Finlay Williams, 1940-1950. - file 4: Addresses and dates from Jennie Short's book. Includes birth, marriage and death dates for members of the Bell, Short, and Williams family; latest date 1969. - file 5: Leone Hinds, correspondence, 1959-1995. - Item 1: Letter to Mrs. A.E. Hinds, R.R. 1, Hespeler, from Mrs. Leola Day, regarding the publication by her husband, Frank Day: Here and There in Eramosa, 21 Sept. 1959. - Item 2: Letter to Mrs. A. Leone Hinds, 62 Melville Street, Elora, from William G.
