Nickle / Ostrander / Spears family records, Conn, ca. 1875-1969. Photographs and correspondence that once belonged to Margaret Bell Ostrander (nee Nickle, 1913-1967) of Conn, Ontario, and her relatives. The collection includes photographs of the Nickle family and relations, postcards and correspondence, and several negatives taken at the Nickle/Ostrander home in Conn. Margaret B. Nickle was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nickle of Conn. She married Reginald Ostrander (1918-1970) of Durham on 16 Feb. 1942. After Reginald's return from serving in the Royal Canadian Medical Corps during the Second World War, he moved to Galt where he lived until his death on 12 May 1970. Margaret Ostrander served as the post mistress at Conn, Ontario, from 11 Jan. 1951 until her death in October 1967. The Mount Forest Confederate of 11 Jan. 1951 noted that, "The postmastership of Conn changed hands on Monday. Worthington Bros. who have held the office for the past twenty-six years, passed it over to Mrs. Ostrander who will look after His Majesty's mails in future, at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nickle. It is interesting to note that the new postmistress is a great granddaughter of the first postmaster, Robert Conn, after whom the village was named some eighty years ago… Conn is a busy corner about eight miles from town, the meeting place of four townships, Arthur Egremont, Proton, and West Luther, and although its population is small, it is constantly changing…". Many of the negatives in this collection reflect Margaret Ostrander family's home life at the Conn Post Office during this period. She passed away on 26 October 1967 at the age of 55 and is buried in Woodland Cemetery, Southgate Township. After her death, the position of postmistress was taken over by her relative [daughter?], Mrs. Glenna M. Spears. Margaret and Reginald had a daughter, Margaret Agnes Elizabeth Ostrander, known as "Margie", who married Donald Robert Glover (d. 2011) on 06 January 1964. They had a daughter, Margy, who married Ken Smart and lived in Conn. Collection consists of 53 Photographs; 123 negatives; 46 postcards; 33 Envelopes; 22 other textual records, and several digital copies.
