Collage on wood panel (.01) by Canadian artist Paul Morin, untitled, ca. 1992; top half of piece includes birch bark and two strips of cloth, adhered to chip board panel with glue, then over painted with white and metalic gold paint; lower half includes seven vertical [birch?] twigs, bound together with a rawhide leather cord which trails to the right; also adhered to lower half of image are a red maple leaf, a smaller [birch?] leaf, a rafia string, tied at centre right, and a piece of antler, carved with patterns including a spiral, that is affixed to a mound of adhesive or paint; chip board panel painted white, peach, yellow, and gold; mounted in a wide, pale blond birch[?] wood floater frame (.02). This piece was reproduced as the cover illustration of the artist's 1993 book "Fox Song". On 06 Dec. 2014, the following information was published on the artist's website, www.paulmorinstudios.com: "Born in Calgary, Alberta, Paul grew up near Montreal, Quebec. After studying design at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton, he went on to the Sheridan College illustration program in Ontario before completing his training at the Ontario College of Art. Since 1985 he has produced art installations, music CDs, and videos. He has traveled to Africa, Australia, China and throughout North, Central and South America to research the culture and settings for each story he has illustrated. Over the past decade, Paul has lectured on art, music and primitive cultures at conferences, schools and libraries across the country. His career has taken on a new dimension which allows him to incorporate his interests in travel, anthropology and mythology. It is traditional cultures that interest Paul because they are grounded in the importance of earth, spirit, harmony and wisdom. Paul lives in a cedar house with his wife Janine and sons Palmer and Kadin. His studio is located at the edge of a forest by a wetland near Rockwood, Ontario, Canada." |
