Collection of "letters", which originated when Matthew McPhatter (1815-1901), approached older people in Puslinch Township and collected their reminiscences as individual "letters"; his beginning efforts are reported in the Guelph Mercury, 11 March 1897. Letters in File 1A and File 1B have been filed in order of publication in "The McPhatter Letters" by Anna Jackson (A1992.108); researchers should consult that publication, and its detailed and comprehensive index, in the first instance. Files 1A and 1B contain materials found within a binder labelled "Originals of McPhatter Letters"; additional materials, found loose in an envelope at the back of the binder, have been listed below (Files 2 - 5): NOTE: Biographies marked with an asterisk ( * ) have been written in pencil on paper 21 x 13.5 cm; several are signed or initialled MMcP [Matthew McPhatter].
