Waind family records, Elora, ca. 1900-2003. File 1: Records relating to Elora, Ontario, 1932-1994. - item 1: Statement of account issued to "Miss Maitland" from George H. Shepherd of Elora, Ontario, March and May 1932. 3 pages, the first two typed on dedicated paper, the last a handwritten with note "Paid in full", signed by Irene Shepherd. [ MU 1407 ] - item 2: Receipt book of J. C. Fasken Real Estate and General Insurance, Elora, Ontario, ca. 1950. Comprised of sheets of unused, perforated receipt forms, each dated with the century "19" with the specific year left blank. Yellow paper cover on which has been inscribed "Mar / Bird Seed". [ MU 1407 ] - item 3: VHS videocassette titled on masking tape adhered to side, "Elora Lions Club 40th Anniv. / Elora Legion April 29 1987" and on cover, "Elora Lions Club / 40th Anniv. / April 29 / 87. One hour in length, the video documents the banquet held to celebrate the Elora Legion's 40th anniversary. Attendees were Lions Club members from Elora, Fergus, Rockwood, Atwood, Kitchener, Brantford, Burford, and beyond. Narrated by Hugh Waind and Glen Kelly for Chanel 3 on cable television. It begins with a performance by bagpiper Dean Percy. Waind and Kelly identify the attendees as the camera pans over them during supper. This is followed by a welcome speech by Paul Clark, a toast by Brian Smith with response by Art Woods, and a toast by Derek Ferguson. Visible down the hill is the stone drill shed building, frame house at 32 Water Street, and sign on Metcalfe Street that reads "Welcome to Paradise". Photograph likely by Phyllis Waind of Elora. Inscribed beneath image, "Paradise (Elora) sign / Feb 1994." Inscribed on reverse, "For Movie". The temporary sign was installed for filming of the movie "Trapped in Paradise" starring Nicholas Cage, John Lovitz, and Dana Carvey, which was released in 1994. Set of sixteen black and white lithographs on paper, based on ink wash or watercolour paintings by Canadian artist Percy Runnells (1920-1989), ca. 1975; printed by The Sutherland Press Limited of St. Thomas, Ontario. The lithographs depict churches in Fergus, Elora, and immediate environs. [ MU 1168 o/s ] [ See also ART 324-339 ] File 3: Wellington Rifles portrait, ca. 1900. - ph 51211: Panoramic photograph, a group portrait, seen from above, of the 30th Wellington Rifles at their training camp in Ontario, likely taking during the time of the Boer War, ca. 1900. Four officers on horseback in the front. Behind them are several rows of uniformed soldiers. Group at left is their military band holding musical instruments such as drums, trumpets, and trombones. A few men, women, and children in civilian dress walk the grounds around the men, with a few standing to watch the group portrait being taken. In the background are rows of canon, and behind them, many white tents and horses. Mounted to black card, inscribed on reverse, "30th Wellington Rifles / Col Craig / Maj Moir". [ MC 72 ] File 4: Publications, 1951-2003. - item 1: Booklet, "Adventures in Craftwork: correlating activity projects", published by Hayes School Publishing Company of Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, 1951. Softcover, with red and yellow latticework design and images of various crafts set between the lattices. Interior pages printed in purple ink on white paper and offer illustrations, templates, and instructions for creating a multitude of craft ideas for children or adults, such as making candles, doorstops, stuffed animals, and birdhouses, and making jewellery out of walnuts. Unpaginated. [ MU 1407 ] - item 2: Book, "The Little Immigrants: The Orphans who came to Canada" by Kenneth Bagnell, published by MacMillan of Canada, a division of Gage Publishing Limited, Toronto, 1980. Softcover, 271 pages, illustrated and indexed. It explains the growth of the child immigration movement, outlining the organizations that worked to send poor, often orphaned children, from the British Isles to Canada from the 1870s through 1930s. The book offers the personal stories and experiences of many of these British Home Children, including that of George Gregory of Dublin, Ireland, whose father placed him in the custody of Miss [Ellen] Smyly's Home for Boys, who sent him to Canada and placed him with a family on a farm just outside of Guelph, Ontario.
