Nellie Short (nee Martha Ellen Foster 1899-1992), West Garafraxa Township, diaries, cards, photos, ca.1900-1981. Nellie was born 8 Dec. 1899, the daughter of William Foster and his wife Ann Maria (nee Reilly). On 3 May 1930, she married Frederick Ross Short (1899-1990) and together they farmed near Metz. Later in life, Nellie worked at Short's Nursing Home Lodge in Salem. She died in 1992. Her diaries, from 1926 to 1981 tell of family and church activities; life and work on the farm; weather; births, marriages and deaths. There are some household financial accounts. The diaries include the period when Nellie and Fred were courting (up to 31 Dec. 1928) but not of their marriage. The diaries resume 3 July 1930 and include Nellie's pregnancy. Their daughter, Freda Eleanor Short, was born on 29 March 1935 but she died two days later. This notebook concludes "This book of memories is nearly finished - will be at the end of this month. And what memories it holds. And between each line is written a fuller garden of memories even than these ... This book is dedicated to my mother and sisters who did help me over the hard and rough spots recorded therein especially one." Written in pencil in a "5c Reporter's Note Book" sold by the T. Eaton Co. Limited, Toronto. This file includes family history. - file 2: 1 June 1927 - 31 Dec. 1928. Concludes "Mon. 31. Milder & nice. Fred took John W. and I to Arthur then brought me home in car, spent evening with me and a while. Left with my heartiest & Best Wishes for 1929." Written in pencil in a "5c Reporter's Note Book" sold by the T. Eaton Co. Limited, Toronto. Includes charming poetic invitation to marriage at back of book. 1929 and January-June 1930 not received - file 3: 3 July 1930 - 31 Dec. 1933. Begins with list "In Memoriam"[deaths 1927-1928] at front; Includes brief notes for 25 April-25 July 1928; some household and chicken accounts. Written in pencil and ink in "Daily Journal for 1916" sold by Grand & Toy Limited, Toronto. - file 4a: 1 January 1934 - 31 Dec. 1935. At front: "Diary for Shorts / Years of 1934 and 1935."
